Crustacea Remnant

Background

Remnants have always been a varied strain no matter where you travel in the Wasteland, some mutations have some logic to them based upon the individual's environment, and others seemingly developed out of nowhere making many educated wonder if there was some level of mutagenic adapting advantage or not. However, in Dominus Columbia the sheer number of Crustacea Remnants that have been born and continue to live in the area since its founding has become a hot topic in the local scientific community. Several theories of why almost half the Remnants being born in Dominus Columbia seem to have similar genetic mutations related to local crustaceans have been thrown out. From evolving adaptations to survive the Great Cane each year, to evolving to make daily labor easier on the coast, to evolving based upon what you eat, the theories and scientific studies have been nearly endless. Rumor has it one scientist even attempted to look at the widely popular local seasoning "Spice of the Olde Bay” as possibly being the cause but was quickly shut down by an unnamed Senator over blasphemy.

Regardless of what has caused the spike in Crustacea Remnants, many peoples of The Bailey see it as a blessing rather than a curse. Crustacea Remnants have joined many Saltwise and some Full Dead in assisting in underwater labor efforts such as salvaging, foraging, repair, agriculture, hunting, and even the occasional defense against hostile critters or pirates. As such many Crustacea Remnants have formed small communities living on the shores of The Bailey with some even going as far as to live on islets just off the coast of the peninsula. It’s easier to live on a coast with varying tides when it’s possible to live both under and above water and only have to worry about what day of the week it is instead of if you’ll wake up gasping for air or not. Many of these settlements tend to be filled with volunteers that assist with relief efforts during and after the Great Cane. The Crustacea Remnant’s natural ability to survive the storms as well as defend themselves and others against any potential threats that wash ashore make them the perfect volunteers. Younger Crustacea Remnants that are filled with energy, gumption, and the willingness to earn a couple of shells tend to relocate themselves to port based settlements to earn a wage with their unique set of skills which are almost always welcomed.

Costume and Roleplay Requirements

Crustacea Remnant mutations vary widely across all forms of crustacean animal traits, with many having at least one if not more of the following: chitinous shells, claws, eye stalks, antenna, and tail fins. Chitin colors and hues tend to be either green, red, or blue with the occasional ghostly white or translucent. Crustacea Remnants born to Crustacea Remnant parents tend to have a larger number of mutations as well as more pronounced mutations that are common to their parents than those born to other strains, unlike how their cousins across the Wasteland tend to be born. It’s not uncommon for an entire family to have the same mutation across generations.

Because of their generally helpful nature, regardless of their disposition, Crustacea Remnants are usually accepted with open arms in polite society, even to the point where local Pure Bloods will overlook the fact that some of them can’t wear proper clothing due to their shells. For many Crustacea Remnants, their trait obsession tends to involve helping others. Many decades of assisting the peoples of Dominus Columbia endure the Great Cane has made helping others nearly part of their identity, and few locals would say no to a helping claw every now and then.
